On this page Program overview Being a Foster Grandparent How to apply More information Program overview The Foster Grandparent Program connects older adult volunteers (55+) with children and youth who have special or exceptional needs, offering one-on-one mentorship, tutoring, and emotional support in schools, community centers, and child care centers. As part of AmeriCorps Seniors, its dual purpose is to empower seniors to stay active and engaged while providing critical, nurturing support that improves the academic, social, and emotional development of children and strengthens intergenerational connection. Being a Foster Grandparent Requirements Be age 55 or older Reside in Clackamas, Multnomah, or Washington, Counties Pass a National Service Criminal History Check (including fingerprinting and sex offender registry) Have an interest in working with and supporting children Expectations Complete 20 hours of prerequisite training Volunteer at least 5 hours per week Attend monthly meetings on the first Friday of each month Abide by all program standards while at volunteer stations Benefits Hourly non-taxable stipend through AmeriCorps Seniors* Transportation reimbursement* Meals during volunteer sessions and/or meal reimbursement* Monthly training and support with staff and other volunteers How to apply Ready to become a Foster Grandparent? AmeriCorps Senior FGP stipend is currently $4/hour including approved training time. Volunteer’s annual income typically does not exceed 200% of the HHS Poverty guideline for Oregon. In 2026, the limit is $31,920 for a family unit of one and $43,280 for a family unit of two. The Foster Grandparent Program is a program of Americorps Seniors.
