Atlantic hurricane season begins with forecast for below-average activity

The Atlantic hurricane season began Monday with forecasters expecting activity to fall below historical norms, marking the first such prediction in more than a decade.

Meteorologists based their forecast on current atmospheric conditions and ocean temperatures across the Atlantic basin. The projection signals a reversal from the pattern that has dominated recent years, during which the region consistently produced more storms than the long-term average.

Forecasters attributed the anticipated slowdown to specific oceanographic and meteorological factors, though the season remains unpredictable. Even below-average years can produce dangerous storms, and forecasters cautioned residents in hurricane-prone areas against complacency.

The National Hurricane Center and other forecasting agencies will update their outlooks as the season progresses through November. Previous below-average seasons have still generated major hurricanes that caused significant damage and loss of life.

Atlantic hurricane activity has intensified over the past decade, with several seasons producing well above the average of 14 named storms annually. Scientists have linked increased activity partly to warmer ocean temperatures and changing atmospheric patterns, though they continue studying the complex factors that influence storm development and intensity.
