Working Out vs. Training: What’s The Difference?
West Melbourne residents often use the terms "working out" and "training" interchangeably, but local fitness experts suggest there's a significant distinction that could impact personal health and fitness goals.
According to Sarah Jenkins, owner of "Peak Performance Gym" on Minton Road, the core difference lies in intentionality and structure. "Working out is generally about physical activity for health and enjoyment – a jog around the neighborhood, a spin class, or lifting some weights," Jenkins explains. "It's good for you, but it often lacks a specific, measurable goal."
Training, on the other hand, is described as a more focused and progressive approach. "When you're training, you have a clear objective," says Mark Thompson, a certified personal trainer who offers sessions at the West Melbourne Community Park. "Whether it's running a 5K, increasing your bench press by a certain amount, or improving your flexibility for a specific sport, training involves a structured plan designed to achieve that goal over time."
Thompson highlights that training typically includes periodization, where routines are varied to prevent plateaus and reduce injury risk, and often involves tracking progress. "Someone training for the upcoming 'Space Coast Marathon,' Brevard County's annual running tradition, isn't just going for random runs; they're following a detailed schedule with specific distances, paces, and recovery days," he adds.
For those looking to move from general workouts to more targeted training, Jenkins advises starting with a clear, achievable goal. "Don't just say 'I want to get fit.' Say 'I want to be able to walk the entire length of the West Melbourne Greenway Trail, a scenic community path, without stopping by July,'" she suggests. "Then, you can build a plan around that."
Both experts agree that any form of physical activity is beneficial. However, understanding the distinction between working out and training can help West Melbourne residents approach their fitness journeys with greater purpose and potentially achieve more satisfying results.
