Wilton Manors Police Shooting: What We Know So Far

An officer-involved shooting in Wilton Manors left one man critically injured during a domestic-violence disturbance call, and officials say the case remains under active investigation.

Wilton Manors police said they could confirm the shooting but released few details because the incident is still being investigated, according to the department. Det. Haley Plante said, "Right now all we can say is that this is a very active investigation, we currently have the roads locked down and secured."

Officials said the man was struck by police gunfire and taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition after life-saving measures were performed at the scene, according to Wilton Manors police and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue. Police said no officers were hurt.

The Broward Sheriff's Office Forensic Response Unit is assisting with evidence collection, according to officials. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to take over the shooting investigation, which authorities said is standard protocol for police-involved shootings.

Road closures remained in place around the scene, with officials reporting locked-down streets and CBS Miami reporting the road in front of the home would be closed for several hours. The Miami Herald reported the area around Northeast 26th Street and North Andrews Avenue was secured and shut down for some time.

Dispatch records show 73 similar officer-involved shooting incidents have been reported in Fort Lauderdale over the past six months.

What's next: the active investigation will continue under local police with assistance from the Broward Sheriff's Office, before FDLE takes over as protocol requires in police-involved shootings.
