Wilton Manors Police Shooting: What We Know So Far

Officials and news reports say the incident began during an overnight domestic violence disturbance at the home, where police were responding to a call involving an armed man, according to Wilton Manors police and multiple reports. At least one person was shot and taken to Broward Health Medical Center with a gunshot wound, and one report said the man was in critical condition. Wilton Manors police said no officers were injured.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the police-shooting investigation as standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, according to WSVN and other reports. Wilton Manors Det. Haley Plante said the case was still active and would be referred to the Broward Sheriff's Office and FDLE. CBS Miami reported that Broward Sheriff's Office would continue the investigation, while FDLE investigates the shooting itself.

The response included Wilton Manors Police, Broward Sheriff's Office, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue and FDLE, according to the reports. The Broward Sheriff's Office Forensic Response Unit assisted with evidence gathering, and roads near the scene were locked down and secured during the investigation. One report said the road in front of the home was expected to remain closed for several hours.

Dispatch records show 73 similar officer-involved shooting incidents in Fort Lauderdale in the past six months.
