When Darkness Falls: North Port Residents Urged to Prepare for Power Outages

NORTH PORT – As the spring storm season approaches, North Port officials and local utility providers are reminding residents, from those in the historic Warm Mineral Springs area to newer neighborhoods, to prepare for potential power outages. While no specific threat has been identified, the city is emphasizing proactive measures to ensure community safety and minimize disruption when the lights go out.

"Being prepared is key, especially with Florida's unpredictable weather patterns," stated a representative from the North Port Emergency Management office. "We encourage every household to have an emergency kit ready, including non-perishable food, water, flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered radio."

Local utility companies, including Florida Power & Light (FPL), have also issued statements encouraging customers to review their emergency plans. FPL has been conducting routine maintenance and inspections across the North Port service area in recent weeks to bolster infrastructure ahead of the storm season. This includes trimming vegetation near power lines and upgrading equipment.

Residents are advised to charge all electronic devices, including cell phones and laptops, before a storm hits. It is also recommended to fill vehicle fuel tanks and withdraw cash, as ATMs and gas stations may be inoperable during extended outages. For those with medical needs requiring electricity, such as oxygen concentrators, it is crucial to have a backup plan in place and to inform utility providers of critical medical equipment.

The North Port Fire Rescue Department also stressed the importance of generator safety. "Generators should always be operated outdoors in a well-ventilated area, far away from windows and doors, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning," advised a spokesperson for the department. "Never run a generator inside your home or garage."

Information on creating an emergency preparedness kit and safety tips during power outages can be found on the City of North Port's official website and through local utility providers, as well as at community hubs like the North Port Area Library. Staying informed and prepared can make a significant difference when darkness falls unexpectedly.
