Weston SWAT Standoff: What We Know So Far

A deputy-involved shooting in Weston ended after an armed man barricaded himself with two children, then fled in a vehicle and crashed before being taken into custody, according to NBC Miami and the Broward Sheriff's Office. Here is what we know so far.

According to Broward Sheriff's Office officials, the incident began with a report of a domestic incident in Hollywood and led deputies to a home on Opal Creek Drive in Weston. Investigators said the subject, identified as 48-year-old Valdemar Milto of Weston, was armed and barricaded inside the home with two children before later exiting and getting into a vehicle.

Authorities said an armed encounter occurred between Milto and deputies, prompting deputies to fire their weapons. The suspect then continued driving, crashed into a tree and tried to run on foot before deputies took him into custody, according to initial reporting. Officials said the children inside the home were not hurt and no other injuries were reported.

The response included deputies, SWAT and a prolonged perimeter around the neighborhood, which remained closed for hours. Residents were allowed to leave but were not allowed to re-enter the community while the scene was active, according to officials and initial reporting.

At least two deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative assignment pending further review, according to Broward Sheriff's Office policy. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which officials said is standard practice in police-involved shootings.

Dispatch records show prior incidents at this address, including other, medical emergency and smoke investigation calls in 2026. Those records do not indicate whether any of those calls were related to Wednesday's incident.

What happens next: investigators with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are expected to continue reviewing the shooting and the deputies' actions, while Broward Sheriff's Office said its administrative review is underway.
