Weston SWAT Standoff: What We Know So Far
A SWAT standoff in Weston ended with a deputy-involved shooting, a vehicle crash and an arrest, according to NBC Miami.
Broward Sheriff’s Office said the incident started with a domestic disturbance reported in Hollywood before deputies went to a home on Opal Creek Drive in Weston, where an armed man barricaded himself inside with two children.
Authorities said the man later came out of the house, got into a vehicle and had an armed encounter with deputies, prompting deputies to fire their weapons, according to NBC Miami and Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Officials said the suspect kept driving after the shooting, crashed into a tree and then tried to run on foot before deputies took him into custody. He was identified as 48-year-old Valdemar Milto of Weston.
The children inside the home were not hurt, and no other injuries were reported, according to officials.
The response shut down the neighborhood for hours. Residents were allowed to leave but were not permitted to re-enter while deputies secured the area, according to NBC Miami.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard in deputy-involved shootings, and the two deputies who fired their weapons were placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the review.
Dispatch records show prior incidents at the address, including an other call on Sept. 5, a medical emergency on Sept. 5 and a smoke investigation on Aug. 5.
What happens next will likely depend on the FDLE investigation and any additional statements from Broward Sheriff’s Office.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
