Weston Clinic Fire: What We Know So Far
A fire at Cleveland Clinic’s new Weston building prompted a major evacuation Thursday afternoon, and officials are still working to determine exactly what sparked it.
Weston city officials said the fire started in an electrical room at the new Cleveland Clinic Neurological Center around 12:30 p.m., according to NBC 6 South Florida. CBS Miami reported that hundreds of employees and patients were evacuated during the incident, and WSVN said the fire involved a roof area or a building under construction at the Weston site.
One report said firefighters extinguished the fire after responding, but the available coverage does not confirm any injuries or fatalities, according to NBC 6, CBS Miami and WSVN. No suspect or criminal cause has been identified in the reports reviewed.
CBS Miami reported that investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the initial fire after a propane tank explosion was said to have followed the first blaze. WSVN also said the cause remained unknown in its update.
The response appears to have been substantial, with multiple emergency units dispatched to a health care campus and a building under construction, which typically indicates a high-priority incident because of the risk to patients, staff and adjacent structures. No confirmed road closures or traffic impacts were reported in the available coverage.
Dispatch records show 81 similar structure fire incidents in Weston over the past six months.
Officials have not announced a final cause, and the fire remains under investigation, according to the reports. Additional updates are expected as investigators and city officials release more information.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
