Western Broward Brush Fire: What We Know So Far
A fast-moving brush fire in western Broward County burned at least 200 acres and was about 50% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service. This is what we know so far.
Officials said the fire was burning near U.S. 27 and Griffin Road, close to the Dania Beach area referenced in the initial dispatch, and CBS News Miami reported the blaze had grown to about 120 acres by 9 p.m. before later estimates rose higher. That shift shows the fire’s footprint changed quickly during the response, according to the reports.
No homes were in danger, according to WSVN, and no confirmed injuries or fatalities had been reported in the available coverage. The cause of the fire was not stated in any of the reports reviewed, and there was no suspect information reported.
Davie Fire Rescue said it, the Florida Forest Service and Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue were all responding and working to bring the fire under control, while Broward Sheriff’s Office units blocked the roadway near the scene and directed drivers to turn around and head northbound to Interstate 595. The southbound lane of U.S. 27 was closed near Griffin Road during the response, with drivers advised to use I-595, and CBS later reported the highway reopened the following morning.
Dispatch records show prior incidents at this location, including another call on May 27 and a medical emergency on May 20.
Officials had not announced a cause or any arrests, and the available reports said crews were still actively monitoring and containing the fire. Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
