Western Broward Brush Fire: What We Know So Far
A fast-moving brush fire in western Broward County has burned more than 11,000 acres and is now 60% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service. This is what we know so far.
The fire was reported near Mack’s Fish Camp and stretched across a wide area from U.S. 27 north through Pembroke Pines, according to WSVN 7News and NBC Miami. Officials temporarily closed Everglades Holiday Park because of the fire.
Smoke from the blaze was blowing toward Alligator Alley, and air quality was affected in western Broward and Pembroke Pines, according to the reporting. Officials said wind conditions were expected to shift, which could make the smoke impact worse. People with outdoor plans in Pembroke Pines and West Broward were urged to factor in the air-quality conditions.
A Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue firefighter said crews had “saturated the area,” meaning they dumped tons of water on the brush, according to WSVN 7News. The fire response remains active, with crews working to hold containment and monitor changing conditions.
In a separate wildfire mentioned in the same reporting, a blaze near Florida City at North Krome Avenue and NW 186th Street had burned about 300 acres and was 50% contained, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
No confirmed injuries or fatalities were reported in the surfaced reporting, and no confirmed cause, suspect information or criminal investigation details were released. No confirmed evacuations were reported.
Dispatch records show there have been seven similar brush fire incidents in Dania Beach in the past six months.
What happens next will depend on whether containment improves as winds shift and crews continue mop-up operations. Officials are expected to provide additional updates as conditions change, but no formal investigation details have been released in the surfaced reporting.
Day.News will continue to update this story as officials release more information.
