Western Broward Brush Fire: What We Know So Far

A large brush fire in western Broward County has grown into a major Everglades response, with officials and local outlets identifying the blaze as the Max Road Fire. This is what we know so far.

According to NBC Miami, CBS News Miami, Fox Weather, Sun Sentinel and WPBF, the fire was reported near North Krome Avenue and Northwest 186th Street, west of U.S. 27 and Pines Boulevard. Coverage put the fire size at roughly 5,000 acres in earlier updates and about 11,000 acres in later reports, while containment estimates ranged from about 20% to 80% depending on the timing of the report.

Officials said there were no confirmed injuries or fatalities in the coverage reviewed, and there was no imminent threat to nearby communities, including the Holly Lake area, at the time of the latest reports. Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue said the Florida Forest Service continued containment operations on the fire and that residents should expect a heavy presence of helicopters and emergency personnel in the area.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said it received reports of a brush fire near North Krome Avenue and Northwest 186th Street, while Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue said crews were using helicopters and emergency personnel to carry out water drops and containment work. Officials urged residents to stay aware of local conditions but said the response itself should not be cause for alarm.

Dispatch records show prior incidents at this location or nearby on May 23, including two other calls and a fall injury report.

What happens next will depend on how quickly crews can keep pushing containment lines around the fire. Officials have not released a cause, suspect information or any arrest details, and the investigation status remains limited to active suppression efforts by fire agencies.
