WCU Student's Final Gift: Garrett Nicholas Saves 3 Lives in West Chester Tragedy
National Desk
April 21, 2026
Garrett Nicholas, 21, was crossing the street steps from his fraternity house in West Chester when he was struck by a car on April 12. He died shortly after at Paoli Hospital, leaving behind a community in shock and a family grappling with unimaginable loss.
But from that tragedy has come profound hope. According to the Gift of Life Donor Program, Nicholas's organ donation has already saved three lives. Through tissue donation, his contribution will extend far beyond those three recipients—helping to heal up to 100 additional people who will benefit from his donated tissue.
The decision by Nicholas's family to donate reflects a generosity that extended beyond his lifetime. His father told mourners at a fraternity fundraiser held one week after his death that his son's gift ultimately helped three adults and six children—a total that underscores the ripple effect of organ and tissue donation.
The Gift of Life Donor Program announced the donation results in a press release Monday, recognizing Nicholas's contribution to those waiting for transplants across Pennsylvania and beyond. For the West Chester University community, the story of Garrett Nicholas has become one of tragedy tempered by the power of giving—a reminder that even in loss, one person's decision to donate can change multiple lives forever.
