Virginia Beach Under Beach Hazards Statement: High Rip Current Risk, Coastal Flooding

Virginia Beach residents and visitors are advised to take immediate action due to a Beach Hazards Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield VA.

A high risk of rip currents is expected through Wednesday evening. Inexperienced swimmers must remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. Large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are expected in the surf zone until 6 PM EDT Thursday. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 2 PM EDT Wednesday, with up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. A Coastal Flood Warning follows from 2 PM Wednesday to 4 AM EDT Friday, where two to three feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas. This may lead to numerous road closures and inundation of low-lying property. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. If travel is required, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
