Victor Hedman Confirms Mental Health Leave During Lightning Season

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman confirmed on May 5 that he took a leave of absence late in the NHL regular season and through the playoffs to focus on his mental health. The team had announced his leave for personal reasons on March 25, placing him on long-term injured reserve.

Hedman last played on March 19. The Lightning's season concluded with a first-round playoff elimination by the Montreal Canadiens in seven games. In a statement released by the team, Hedman stated he made the decision to step away to care for himself, emphasizing his role as a leader.

Throughout his 17-season NHL career, all with the Lightning, Hedman has played 1,164 games. He has recorded 172 goals and 639 assists, totaling 811 points. The 35-year-old defenseman has received the Norris Trophy (2018) and the Conn Smythe Trophy (2020), and earned nine All-Star selections. He captained the Lightning to the 2020 Stanley Cup title.
