Vanderbilt Baseball Sweeps Kentucky, Claims No. 4 SEC Tournament Seed in Nashville
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt baseball finished the regular season on a high note Saturday, sweeping Kentucky with a 5-3 victory at Hawkins Field to lock in the No. 4 seed at next week's SEC Tournament in Hoover, Alabama. Starting pitcher Cody Bowker and reliever Fennell combined for 11 strikeouts, with Fennell slamming the door in a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning. The win improved Vanderbilt to 19-11 in SEC play, far exceeding preseason expectations after being picked seventh in the league poll.
The Commodores carried that fire into Hoover, where they dominated the tournament en route to the 2025 SEC Championship. In the quarterfinals, lefty JD Thompson fanned 11 Oklahoma batters over five innings in a 6-1 rout, tallying 17 strikeouts as a staff. Vanderbilt then run-ruled in-state rival Tennessee 10-0 in the semifinals before edging Ole Miss 3-2 in the title game under a shower of confetti at the Hoover Met.
Now 40-16 overall, Vanderbilt awaits its second-round opponent after a first-round bye on Thursday. The program's pedigree shines through, marking their second SEC Tournament crown in three years and reigniting hopes for a national title push. Hawkins Field faithful in Nashville celebrated the sweep, knowing the Vandy Boys' blend of power arms and clutch hitting positions them as Tennessee's top SEC threat.
