UVA Health Boosts Rural Virginia Telehealth with Millions in Grants

UVA Health, in partnership with the Southwest Virginia Coalition, launched the Virginia Consortium to Advance Healthcare in Appalachia, funded by a $5.1 million U.S. Department of Agriculture Emergency Rural Health Care Grant. The initiative unites the UVA Center for Telehealth, University of Virginia’s College at Wise Healthy Appalachia Institute, Southwest Virginia Health Authority, Health Wagon, Tri-Area Health and Ballad Health to deploy telehealth in regions hit hard by COVID-19 and chronic disease. Interactive home monitoring kits—tablets linked to blood pressure cuffs, scales and thermometers—will track cardiovascular risks, enable virtual cardiac rehab and health education for patients in remote areas like Wise County.

The consortium expands UVA's post-COVID care clinic via telehealth, where 70% of patients achieve full recovery, and scales state programs like the Virginia Telemental Health Initiative for virtual counseling and InnoVAte for chronic disease management. In Wise, the Health Wagon and UVA Health distribute FDA-cleared TytoCare TytoHome devices to uninsured families, allowing remote heart, lung, throat, ear and skin exams over the internet—crucial in a county where healthcare deserts persist. Meanwhile, a $15,000 grant supports southern Albemarle County efforts with Scottsville, Central Virginia Health Services, Region 10 Community Services Board and Blue Ridge Health District to pilot on-site care and awareness campaigns.

UVA's SCOPES program equips regional ambulances with iTREAT mobile telestroke kits—videoconferencing and high-speed modems—for UVA neurologists to assess stroke patients en route, targeting Central Virginia's rural gaps where stroke ranks as the fifth leading cause of death. UVA's statewide network spans 153 sites with hundreds of thousands of annual encounters; today, 8% of ambulatory visits are virtual, down from pandemic peaks but saving over 35 million patient driving miles pre-COVID. These efforts align with Virginia's 2026-2030 State Telehealth Plan, cementing UVA's three-decade legacy as the Commonwealth's telehealth hub.
