U.S. forces carried out operations against Iranian-backed groups in response to a drone attack that killed three U.S. service members in Jordan. The U.S. Central Command confirmed these actions, stating they targeted facilities utilized by these groups. Iran's Revolutionary Guard subsequently launched missile attacks. These strikes targeted what the Guard described as an Israeli "spy headquarters" in Erbil, Iraq, and also hit targets in northern Syria. The Guard claimed the Syrian targets were associated with the Islamic State group. Officials stated that the U.S. operations occurred after the drone attack on a U.S. base in Jordan. That incident also injured dozens of U.S. personnel. The U.S. government attributed the drone attack to Iranian-backed militants. Following these events, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, stated, "Iran considers security its red line." He added that Iran would not hesitate to "use all its capabilities" to protect its security and sovereignty. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin affirmed, "We are not seeking war with Iran." He stated that the U.S. would continue to hold responsible those who threaten U.S. forces.
