U.S. Mint Greenlights 24-Karat Trump Gold Coin for 250th Anniversary

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts unanimously approved the design for a 24-karat gold commemorative coin honoring President Donald Trump on Thursday, clearing the U.S. Mint to begin production.[1][2][3] This coin forms part of a congressional program mandating Treasury-issued pieces to commemorate key historical figures and events, specifically aligned with the nation's semiquincentennial on July 4, 2026.[1]
The obverse side prominently displays Trump's image in a suit and tie, derived from a White House photograph, arched with 'LIBERTY' above the dates 1776-2026.[1][2] 'IN GOD WE TRUST' anchors the bottom, flanked by seven stars on one side and six on the other, evoking the original 13 colonies.[1] The reverse features a bald eagle in flight, inscribed with 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'.[1]
Unlike circulating currency, these non-circulating legal tender coins target collectors and will sell at a premium over face value, with proceeds partly directed to semiquincentennial initiatives per authorizing legislation.[1] The Mint routinely produces such limited-run items for presidents, anniversaries, and historic milestones, though no release date or pricing has been set.[1]
Approval came amid Democratic backlash, but the Trump-appointed Commission—composed of his supporters—passed the design without objection.[1][2] This marks a notable fusion of presidential legacy and numismatic tradition as the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary.
