Representatives serve two-year terms. Democrats currently hold the majority in the House. Thirty-five of the 100 seats in the Senate are also on the ballot. Senators serve six-year terms. Republicans presently control the Senate. In addition to congressional races, voters will elect governors in 36 states and three U.S. territories. Numerous state and local offices, including state legislators, mayors, and judges, are also subject to election. Historically, the party occupying the White House often loses congressional seats in midterm elections.
