U.S. Midterm Elections Approach, Shaping Congressional Control
U.S. voters head to the polls on November 3 for midterm elections. The outcomes will decide control of Congress and influence the presidential agenda for the next two years.
WASHINGTON – American voters will participate in midterm elections on November 3. These elections will determine the composition of both chambers of Congress. The results will influence the political landscape for the remainder of President Donald Trump's term.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for election. Representatives serve two-year terms. Democrats currently hold the majority in the House.
Thirty-five of the 100 seats in the Senate are also on the ballot. Senators serve six-year terms. Republicans presently control the Senate.
In addition to congressional races, voters will elect governors in 36 states and three U.S. territories. Numerous state and local offices, including state legislators, mayors, and judges, are also subject to election.
Historically, the party occupying the White House often loses congressional seats in midterm elections. These elections serve as a referendum on the president's performance and the direction of the country.
