U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai sent letters to officials in both Canada and Mexico, notifying them of the U.S. position. The USMCA, which replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) in 2020, includes a sunset clause. This clause mandates a review every six years, allowing any member to withdraw or initiate a 10-year period for renegotiation if conditions for renewal are not met. President Joe Biden previously referred to the USMCA as a significant update to North American trade relations in May 2023. During a state visit by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Biden highlighted the agreement's role in supporting workers and businesses. Both leaders affirmed their commitment to the pact at that time.
