U.S. Brokers Israel-Lebanon Ceasefire Agreement After High-Level Talks

The United States convened its fourth high-level trilateral meeting between Israeli and Lebanese representatives June 2-3, with State Department Counselor Dan Holler announcing a ceasefire agreement on the final day.

Under the terms, Israel and Lebanon agreed to halt hostilities conditional on a complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector. Both delegations committed to establishing pilot zones where the Lebanese Armed Forces will exercise exclusive territorial control, barring non-state actors.

Holler said the agreement creates pathways toward a comprehensive peace and security accord. Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh Moawad participated in the announcement at the State Department building in Washington.

Both nations stated they harbor no hostile intent toward one another and committed to direct negotiations on outstanding disputes. They agreed to build a security framework addressing the dismantlement of non-state armed groups and preventing their resurgence. Discussions drew on Pentagon meetings held May 29.

All parties condemned Iran's regional activities, including support for proxy forces and other destabilizing actions. The U.S. emphasized that any ceasefire agreement must result from direct Israeli-Lebanese negotiations, not through separate channels.

The State Department pledged to strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces' capacity to exercise sovereignty across Lebanese territory. Holler referenced Secretary of State Marco Rubio's June 2 statement characterizing Hezbollah as an adversary to Lebanon, Israel, and the United States.

Leiter stressed that Israel's security depends on Hezbollah's disarmament and the dismantlement of its infrastructure throughout Lebanon. He attributed the achievement to leadership by President Trump, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Moawad emphasized Lebanon's commitment to respecting internationally recognized borders and implementing the ceasefire fully. She said Lebanon would bolster the Lebanese Armed Forces' capacity to assert state control nationwide with U.S. support.

The two delegations scheduled a reconvening of political and security negotiating tracks for the week of June 22. The United States will maintain facilitated communications between the parties during the interim period.
