UPMC Partners for Robotics Plant in Pittsburgh, Adds 300 Jobs

National Desk
April 28, 2026
The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) announced a major expansion into robotics manufacturing, partnering with a local firm to construct a new facility in Pittsburgh dedicated to producing next-generation surgical robots. The project, initially reported by 6abc Action News, is set to create 300 high-skilled jobs, injecting vitality into Western Pennsylvania's economy as the region pivots from steel to high-tech innovation. UPMC's move builds on its deep roots in robotic surgery, with experts already performing minimally invasive procedures across eight hospitals in the Pittsburgh area.[6] The partnership echoes UPMC's history of collaboration in surgical robotics, including a 2022 agreement with Waltham, Massachusetts-based Vicarious Surgical Inc. through the Pittsburgh Collaborative Research Education and Technology Advancement in Surgery (Pittsburgh CREATES), a joint Pitt-UPMC initiative.[1][4] Pittsburgh CREATES, which also involves Carnegie Mellon University, focuses on advancing robotic tools, surgeon training, machine learning, and imaging technologies to revolutionize operating rooms.[2][5] UPMC Enterprises, the health system's commercialization arm, sees vast potential in refining these platforms, as noted by Director Harrison Lands, MD, who marveled at early robotic systems' precision.[3] This facility underscores Pittsburgh's emergence as a medtech powerhouse, leveraging UPMC's vast network—spanning 40 hospitals and serving millions in Pennsylvania—to drive job growth and technological leadership. With robotic surgery expanding rapidly at UPMC sites throughout Western PA, the new plant positions the region to compete globally in a market projected to boom.[7] Local officials and business leaders anticipate the 300 positions will prioritize engineers, technicians, and manufacturing specialists, fostering long-term economic stability in the Keystone State.
