U.P. Tourism Surges as Michigan Rebounds from Recession

The Upper Peninsula's tourism economy is roaring back to life, with lodging reservations surging 25 percent as Michigan residents and visitors alike rediscover the region's natural wonders. Tom Nemacheck, executive director of the Upper Peninsula Travel & Recreation Association, says the tourism numbers are shattering records, driven by pent-up travel demand following the recession and enhanced recreational facilities throughout the region.

The rebound reflects broader trends in Michigan's hospitality sector. Since around 2010, Central Upper Peninsula attractions have seen a noted rise in visitation, particularly at mainland recreation sites managed by the Hiawatha National Forest. The improvement in state park infrastructure has been a key driver of this growth, making the region more accessible and appealing to families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking Michigan's signature experiences—from shipwrecks and lighthouses to waterfalls and mine tours.

With July and August traditionally marking the peak tourism season, business owners and local officials are preparing for what could be the busiest year on record. The leisure and hospitality sector has expanded to meet growing demand, though seasonal employment still fluctuates by over 4,000 workers between high and low seasons as the region adjusts to tourism's feast-or-famine cycles. The Fourth of July marks one of the major peaks, with this year's holiday expected to draw significant crowds to U.P. destinations.

The economic ripple effects are substantial for small communities throughout the region. Tourism-dependent businesses in Escanaba and surrounding areas are hiring additional staff and extending hours to capitalize on the surge in visitors seeking outdoor recreation and cultural attractions.
