WASHINGTON – The Trump administration has removed Syria from the United States' list of state sponsors of terrorism. This action comes as the administration acknowledges Ahmed al-Sharaa as the new president of Syria.
The U.S. government maintains a list of countries designated as state sponsors of terrorism. Inclusion on this list carries various sanctions, including restrictions on U.S. foreign assistance, a ban on defense exports and sales, controls over dual-use items, and miscellaneous financial and other restrictions.
Ahmed al-Sharaa assumed the presidency of Syria. This development has prompted the re-evaluation of Syria's status by the Trump administration.
Officials did not provide immediate details regarding the specific criteria met for Syria's removal from the list.
