United Nations, Red Cross Advocate for Autonomous Weapons Regulations

GENEVA — The United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Tuesday jointly urged countries to adopt international regulations concerning autonomous weapons systems. The organizations specifically advocated for the establishment of prohibitions and restrictions on the use of these technologies.

Representatives from both bodies underscored the evolving characteristics of autonomous weapons systems. Robert Lally, a spokesperson for the ICRC, stated that "the nature of the risks has changed." He added that "the urgency to establish clear international legal frameworks has grown."

Both organizations have previously called for international dialogue on the governance of these weapons. Their renewed statement reflects an ongoing effort to address potential implications associated with their development and deployment.
