Unemployment Aid Claims Reach 52-Year Low

WASHINGTON – Applications for unemployment benefits in the United States fell to 187,000 last week, marking the lowest total recorded in over five decades.

The U.S. Department of Labor released the figures today. This new total represents a decrease from the previous week's revised number of 190,000 applications. Analysts last observed a lower weekly figure in September 1969.

Layoff rates across the country remain at historical lows. This trend persists even as various economic factors present global uncertainties. The four-week moving average for claims, which smooths out weekly volatility, also decreased to 211,750. This figure marks the lowest point for that average since November 1969.

Continuing claims, representing individuals who have filed for benefits for at least two consecutive weeks, also showed a reduction. These claims dropped by 67,000 to 1.35 million. This number reflects the lowest level for continuing claims since January 1970.

These unemployment figures provide an indication of activity within the labor market. Federal agencies collect and report this data weekly.
