Ukrainian drone teams conduct strikes deep inside Russia
Ukrainian drone operators are conducting strikes across vast distances into Russian territory, targeting energy infrastructure including oil refineries and fuel storage depots.
One Ukrainian military unit, the First Center of Unmanned Systems, operates these long-range drones from locations in eastern Ukraine. The unit has demonstrated the capability to reach targets up to 1,200 miles away within Russian territory.
NPR reporters recently spent time embedded with one of these strike teams to observe their operations and document their methods. The reporting provides a rare look at how Ukraine's military has developed and deployed drone technology as a key component of its military strategy.
The strikes represent a significant extension of Ukraine's operational reach. Prior to the expansion of drone capabilities, Ukrainian forces faced severe geographic constraints in engaging Russian targets. The ability to conduct strikes at such distances changes the tactical calculus for both Ukrainian military planners and Russian defense officials.
Russia has established military infrastructure, including fuel distribution networks and refining capacity, across western portions of the country. These facilities had operated largely outside the range of Ukrainian weaponry before the development of the long-range drone program.
The First Center of Unmanned Systems operates under conditions of operational security. The team launches missions from undisclosed locations and maintains protocols to protect their positions and personnel.
Ukraine has prioritized the development and deployment of unmanned systems throughout its conflict with Russia. The expansion of drone capabilities has occurred alongside continued military operations across multiple fronts.
