A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Chambers County, including Valley, Lanett, and Lafayette, effective immediately until 1:30 AM CDT on October 9, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, AL, issued the watch at 10:27 PM CDT on October 8, 2026, indicating significant threats from flooding rain and potential tornadoes.
Residents should prepare for moderate flooding from heavy rain, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, and locally higher amounts possible. A Flood Watch is currently in effect. Evacuations and rescues are possible in vulnerable areas. Heed all flood watches and warnings immediately, as failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS warns of a favorable situation for several tornadoes. Be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued. Significant tornado impacts are possible, including considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures in affected areas.
While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force (10-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph), conditions may still be gusty. Little to no additional wind impacts are expected. Community officials are currently assessing any realized wind impacts.
