Toyota Invests $800M in Georgetown Plant for Electric Vehicle Push
National Desk
May 2, 2026
Toyota Motor North America announced in March 2026 that it would invest $800 million at its Georgetown, Kentucky plant as part of a broader $1 billion capital commitment across its Kentucky and Indiana facilities. The Georgetown investment aims to prepare the world's largest Toyota manufacturing plant for production of a second battery electric vehicle while expanding assembly capacity for two of the company's most popular models—the Camry sedan and RAV4 crossover.
The Georgetown facility, which celebrated 40 years of operations this year, has produced over 14 million vehicles since opening its doors and remains Toyota's flagship U.S. manufacturing complex. The plant currently employs thousands of Kentuckians and has been instrumental in establishing the state as a leader in automotive manufacturing. The latest investment reflects Toyota's commitment to the region even as the company navigates the industry's rapid shift toward electrification.
The $800 million Kentucky investment is part of Toyota's larger five-year, $10 billion expansion plan across U.S. plants announced in November 2025. The company also committed $200 million to its Princeton, Indiana facility to increase production capacity for the Grand Highlander SUV. This dual investment demonstrates Toyota's confidence in its Midwest manufacturing footprint as consumer demand for both traditional and electric vehicles continues to grow.
Governor Andy Beshear has positioned Kentucky as the electric vehicle battery production capital of the United States, securing transformative projects including Ford Motor Co. and SK On's $5.8 billion BlueOval SK Battery Park in Hardin County, AESC's $2 billion gigafactory in Warren County, and Shelbyville Battery Manufacturing's $712 million investment. Toyota's latest Georgetown commitment adds to this momentum, signaling that major automakers remain committed to Kentucky's automotive future despite broader industry challenges.
