Thunderstorms with Gusts to 40 MPH, Hail Expected in Ketchikan Area

Residents of Ketchikan Gateway Borough and Annette Island are advised to monitor weather conditions closely as the National Weather Service (NWS) Juneau has issued a Special Weather Statement for strong thunderstorms.

As of 9:04 PM AKDT, a line of strong thunderstorms has been detected moving north at 30 mph. These storms are expected to bring wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch size hail. The NWS indicates the storms are currently extending from 21 miles southwest of Metlakatla to 16 miles north of Tree Point, or 12 miles east of Mary Island.

Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor damage to outdoor objects is possible.

Locations impacted include Ketchikan, Mary Island, Metlakatla, Tree Point, Saxman, Duke Island, Ward Cove, and Annette.

Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately. This Special Weather Statement is effective until 10:00 PM AKDT tonight.
