The Three Words That Give Your Day Back

“Let me check” is not evasive, rude, or a sign that you’re bad at being helpful. It’s a small pause that keeps other people’s urgency from becoming your schedule.

Today's Affirmation
I give myself time to choose what I can genuinely take on.

The Intention
Today, practice using one simple sentence before agreeing to a request: “Let me check and get back to you.” It works because it interrupts the reflex to say yes while you’re still reacting—to someone’s disappointment, a blinking notification, or the ancient human fear of seeming difficult. You are not promising an answer; you are promising a thoughtful response.

This matters because an automatic yes often creates a delayed no: the missed deadline, the resentful text, the frantic evening spent doing something you never actually had room for. A pause gives you a chance to check the real facts. What else is already on your plate? Is this your responsibility? Do you have the time, energy, and willingness—not just the ability—to do it?

You can use the sentence at work, at home, and in the oddly intense group chat where everyone has somehow become responsible for buying folding chairs. If you already know the answer is no, you still don’t have to produce a courtroom defense. “I checked, and I can’t take this on” is a complete sentence. Kindness does not require you to make your limits sound like an apology.

Morning Practice
Write “Let me check and get back to you” on a note beside your phone or computer. Take one minute to imagine using it today, then name one thing you need to check before saying yes—your calendar, your energy, or an existing commitment. The goal is not to become unavailable; it is to stop volunteering on autopilot.

Evening Reflection
Where today did I give myself enough time to choose, and what changed when I did?
