The Stuff Men Keep Calling “Fine” Until It Isn’t

Question: I’m 39, reasonably fit, and apparently snore like a chainsaw being murdered. My wife has started sleeping in the guest room, which is not helping the romance situation. I don’t feel tired during the day, so do I really need to get checked out, or is this just marriage tax?

It might be marriage tax. It might also be sleep apnea, which is common, underdiagnosed, and not limited to people who are overweight. Loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, morning headaches, high blood pressure, and waking up feeling like you got hit by a bus are all worth discussing with a clinician. Untreated sleep apnea is associated with cardiovascular problems, mood issues, and impaired concentration.

Also: your wife sleeping elsewhere is not a quirky domestic detail. It is data. Get evaluated. A sleep study can often be done at home, and treatment may be much less dramatic than you fear. In the meantime, alcohol close to bedtime can make snoring worse, and sleeping on your side may help. But no, “I don’t feel tired” is not a medical clearance.

Question: I keep saying I’m going to start lifting again, then I spend 45 minutes watching videos about lifting, buy protein powder, and do absolutely nothing. I used to be in good shape. Now I’m carrying around a gym membership like it’s a character reference.

Yeah, that’s on you—but not because you’re lazy. You’re treating motivation like the starting gun. It usually shows up after action, not before it. Research on habit formation consistently points toward making the behavior small, obvious, and repeatable.

For the next two weeks, forget your old program. Go to the gym three times and do two exercises for two sets each. That’s it. Leave before you feel heroic. You’re rebuilding the identity of “a guy who goes,” not auditioning for a supplement commercial.

Question: My girlfriend says I shut down whenever we argue. I don’t yell. I don’t insult her. I just go quiet and start cleaning something with unnecessary intensity. Isn’t that better than making things worse?

Quieter is not automatically healthier. If you need ten minutes to cool off, say that clearly and give a time when you’ll return to the conversation. Walking away without a return time feels like abandonment, even if you’re secretly reorganizing the spice drawer.

Your actionable step: today, schedule the appointment you’ve been avoiding—sleep evaluation, gym session, or the conversation you keep postponing—and put it on your calendar before you close this page.
