The Dad Bod Is Not a Moral Failure—But It Is Still Your Responsibility

Question: I’m 38, have two kids under eight, and I get weirdly winded playing tag for five minutes. I’m not huge, but I’m softer than I used to be and my knees complain on stairs. I keep telling myself I’m just busy. Am I being dramatic, or is this a problem?

You’re not being dramatic. You’re also not doomed. “Busy” may explain how you got here, but it can’t be the entire plan for getting out.

Start with a medical checkup if the breathlessness is new, severe, or comes with chest pain, dizziness, fainting, or unusual fatigue. Otherwise, treat this like a basic maintenance issue, not a character indictment. The goal is not to become the shirtless guy yelling near a tire in a parking lot. It’s to be able to play with your children without your lungs filing a formal complaint.

Walk briskly for 20–30 minutes four days a week. Twice a week, do simple strength work: squats to a chair, push-ups against a counter, rows with a backpack, and carries. Research consistently links regular aerobic and resistance exercise with better cardiovascular health, strength, mood, and function. Boring works. That’s why it survives.

Question: My wife and I have been together 12 years. I still love her, but I’m not feeling much sexual desire anymore. We’re both tired, and now sex feels like another appointment I’m failing to keep. I’m embarrassed to even bring it up because she’ll hear “you’re not attractive.”

She may hear that if you drop the subject for another six months. Silence is not kindness; it’s a mystery novel with a bad ending.

Desire gets flattened by poor sleep, stress, depression, medication side effects, alcohol, resentment, and the sheer logistics of raising a family. It can also fade when every touch becomes a negotiation about chores. Tell her the truth without making her body the defendant: “I love you, I miss feeling close, and I think stress and exhaustion have changed something in me.” Then make time to talk when neither of you is already rejected, angry, or half-asleep.

And yes, get checked if the change is persistent. Low libido can be a relationship issue, a health issue, or both. You don’t earn points for suffering privately.

Question: I keep restarting fitness every Monday. I buy gear, make a heroic plan, miss two workouts, then eat like I’m punishing a rival. What is wrong with me?

Nothing mysterious. Your plan is probably built for a fantasy version of you with unlimited time and no bad Tuesdays.

Make the minimum embarrassingly easy: ten minutes of walking or one set of exercises, every day. If you do more, excellent. If not, you still kept the appointment. Consistency beats intensity when intensity keeps disappearing.

Your one actionable step: Before bed tonight, put on your shoes and take a 10-minute walk—no negotiating with yourself once the shoes are on.
