Texas Rep. Talarico Stuns Nation with Shock U.S. Senate Primary Win

AUSTIN, Texas — Texas State Rep. James Talarico electrified supporters late Tuesday night, proclaiming his primary victory over U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett in the race for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Sen. John Cornyn in November. 'Tonight our campaign is shocking the nation. We are still waiting for an official call, but we are confident in this movement we've built together. Every vote must be counted. Every voice must be heard,' Talarico declared at his election night event in Austin.[1][4]
The 36-year-old Democrat from Austin surged past Crockett, a vocal Trump critic known for her pugilistic style, in a contest that tested visions for the party's future. Talarico, who has cultivated a national profile opposing President Donald Trump, pitched a message of unity and change over Crockett's confrontational approach. 'We're not just trying to win an election. We are trying to fundamentally change our politics,' he said, while pledging to earn support from Crockett's backers.[4]
Talarico's win follows a string of Democratic breakthroughs in Texas, including Christian Menefee's victory in a special election for a U.S. House seat vacated by the late Sylvester Turner. Menefee, who vowed to 'tear ICE up from the roots' in response to Trump's immigration crackdown, captured the district on Feb. 1, 2026, amid redistricting that puts him back on the ballot soon.[2][5] Another upset saw Taylor Ramett flip a deep-red state Senate seat, fueling optimism for Cornyn's vulnerability.[5]
On the Republican side, Cornyn failed to clinch the primary outright, advancing to a runoff with Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after neither exceeded 50% on Tuesday. President Trump, who sat out the GOP Senate primary, indicated Wednesday he would endorse 'soon,' injecting uncertainty into the race.[1]
Democrats frame these results as a 'backlash to extremism,' with Talarico telling ABC News the special election wins show Texans ready to target Cornyn's seat.[5] As the state legislature's session unfolds — tracked by the Texas House site listing members like Talarico — his ascent spotlights deepening national divides over immigration, funding for ICE and CBP, and midterm stakes.[6][7][9]
With Cornyn and Paxton's runoff looming and Talarico consolidating his base, Texas emerges as a pivotal 2026 battleground, where anti-Trump energy clashes with GOP incumbency.
