Texas Oil Gushes to 2.1B Barrels in 2025, Fueling Houston Boom

National Desk
May 3, 2026
Texas oil and natural gas production soared to unprecedented heights in 2025, with the state delivering nearly 2.1 billion barrels of crude oil and a record 13.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, according to Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owners Association (TIPRO) data released this year.[4] This marked a leap from 2024's already historic 2.003 billion barrels of oil and 12.62 trillion cubic feet of gas, as reported by the Railroad Commission of Texas on March 26, 2025.[2] The Permian Basin, spanning West Texas and southeastern New Mexico but dominated by Texas output, accounted for roughly half of U.S. crude and one-fifth of natural gas, fueling efficiency gains despite fewer active rigs.[5][6] Houston, dubbed the Energy Capital of the World by the Greater Houston Partnership, anchors this boom with access to 3 million workers and more engineers than any other U.S. metro area.[1] The metro's economy pulsed with growth as record production—bolstered by Permian and Eagle Ford Shale innovations—pushed U.S. crude output to an average 13.6 million barrels per day nationwide.[4][5] Local operators in Houston's bustling Energy Corridor reported surging revenues amid steady global demand, with the Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA) noting earlier 2023 peaks of 5.7 million barrels per day that set the stage for sustained dominance.[3] Economic ripples hit hard across Texas, from Midland's rig yards to Houston's boardrooms. TXOGA Chief Economist Dean Foreman highlighted Texas claiming 43.2% of U.S. oil in peak months, driving billions in state revenue and thousands of high-wage jobs.[3] As U.S. production hit records like November's 5.9 million barrels per day—led by Texas—the sector's productivity outpaced rig counts, promising stability through 2026 amid rising global demand forecasts from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.[5]
