NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Christa Pike, a death row inmate in Tennessee, remains in critical condition after surviving two attempts at lethal injection, her attorney, Kelley Henry, stated on Tuesday. The state's execution procedure ceased after the second attempt, leaving Pike alive. Prison officials attempted to administer the lethal injection drugs to Pike twice over several hours. Henry told reporters that Pike is now under continuous medical observation. Her attorneys are seeking to obtain her medical records and want an independent investigation into the circumstances of the failed execution. They also plan to pursue legal action to prevent any further execution attempts. Pike was originally scheduled for execution by lethal injection on Tuesday evening. Witnesses present in the execution chamber reported that medical personnel struggled for over an hour to establish intravenous access. After one attempt failed, officials briefly paused the proceedings, and then attempted a second injection. That attempt also reportedly failed to administer the full dosage of drugs. The Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed the execution did not proceed as planned. They released a statement indicating that the process was halted due to unforeseen complications with IV access and that Pike was returned to her cell. Officials have not provided additional details regarding her current medical status. Pike received a death sentence in 1996 for the murder of Colleen Slemmer. Pike and two others killed Slemmer while all four were residents at a Knoxville Job Corps center.Related Topics
