NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Governor Bill Lee has issued an immediate suspension of all executions in Tennessee, initiating a full review of the state's lethal injection protocols. The decision followed an attempt to execute Christa Gail Pike, 50, on Thursday.
Pike remained alive after the execution procedure. Her attorneys stated she was snoring loudly following the attempt. Emergency medical personnel transported Pike from the prison to a hospital.
Pike's legal team confirmed her transfer to a medical facility for treatment. They reported state officials had not provided them with details regarding her current medical condition. Governor Lee's office announced the moratorium and review shortly after the incident.
