TCC Chief Sharon Hildebrand Connects with Upper Tanana Communities in May Outreach

Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) Chief Sharon Hildebrand and TCC staff visited Tanacross, Tok, and Northway in May to connect with Tribal leadership, community members, and local partners. The outreach aimed to understand the priorities and concerns impacting the Upper Tanana region.

The May visits provided an opportunity for TCC leadership to strengthen relationships and listen directly to community voices. Discussions covered a range of topics, including behavioral health and substance use treatment, Elder care and housing, patient travel, public safety, housing needs, cost of living challenges, and the importance of supporting cultural and community events in the villages.

During her visit, Chief Hildebrand stopped at Walter Northway School. She met with Head Start students and supported the student art show by purchasing artwork created by the students. This highlighted the creativity and talent of local youth while celebrating education and cultural expression within the community.

TCC staff also toured the Upper Tanana Health Center. They met with employees and learned about the healthcare services provided to residents across the subregion. TCC expressed gratitude to the communities of Tanacross, Tok, and Northway for their warm welcome and for sharing their experiences, ideas, and priorities. These visits play an important role in helping TCC work alongside Tribes to support community-driven goals, strengthen services, and advance the well-being of communities across the region.

TCC continues to use the information gathered from these visits to inform its work and support the specific needs identified by Upper Tanana residents. Residents can anticipate TCC incorporating these insights into future initiatives and service improvements.
