Tampa Violent Crime Drops 16.6% in 2025, Outpacing Nation: TPD
TAMPA, Fla. — Tampa's violent crime rate fell 16.6% in 2025, outpacing a 12.3% national drop, according to the Tampa Police Department's 2025 annual report released this year. Overall crime across the city declined 21.3%, with significant reductions in homicides, property crimes and teen-related offenses. The report, available on the city's website at tampa.gov/police/crimedata, highlights progress in neighborhoods from Ybor City to South Tampa. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw announced the figures during a media briefing at department headquarters on North Falkenburg Road. "Homicides dropped 52.8% compared to the previous year," Bercaw stated in the report. Auto burglaries and guns stolen from vehicles — often linked to juveniles — decreased 35.9%. Traffic fatalities also declined, though pedestrian deaths remain a priority, particularly along busy corridors like Kennedy Boulevard and Dale Mabry Highway. The department attributes the improvements to adding 100 new officers, expanding neighborhood watch programs and deploying advanced technology. In Ybor City, additional cameras and license plate readers have integrated with the Real-Time Crime Center's FUSUS system for live data feeds. First responder drones and virtual reality officer training have further bolstered response times citywide. Targeted community engagement played a key role, Bercaw noted, building on efforts that positioned Tampa as having the 14th-lowest violent crime rate among 59 major U.S. cities in 2022, per a Major Cities Chiefs Association survey cited in TPD analyses. Safer southeast neighborhoods contrast with historically higher-crime southern areas, but gains are citywide. The 2025 report, titled "FINAL-Annual Report 2025," is accessible as a PDF on tampa.gov under police documents. Chief Bercaw emphasized sustained focus: "This progress didn't happen by accident — it's the result of targeted policing and community partnerships." Residents can view interactive crime data and maps at the TPD's online portal.
