Tamarac Crash Involving BSO Cruiser: What We Know So Far
A Tamarac crash that involved a Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser and a civilian vehicle left one person dead and several others hospitalized, according to officials and news reports. Here is what we know so far.
According to BSO and local news reports, the collision happened during a pursuit of a stolen Jeep Cherokee out of Margate and brought the chase to an end. BSO said the civilian driver was later pronounced dead, while a BSO deputy, the suspected car thief and a passenger in the civilian vehicle were also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials said the crash occurred near Northwest 31st Avenue and West Prospect Road in Tamarac, not at the Rock Island Road address listed in the initial dispatch. The intersection stayed closed for hours while investigators processed the scene, according to reports.
The response included Broward Sheriff’s Office units already tied to the pursuit, along with investigators from Internal Affairs, Traffic Homicide and Violent Crimes, who were notified after the crash, according to BSO. The injuries described in reporting were non-life-threatening for the survivors, but the crash remains under active investigation and possible charges for the suspect have not been announced.
Dispatch records show prior incidents at the Rock Island Road address on May 10 and May 11, including two calls on May 11.
What happens next will depend on BSO’s Internal Affairs review and follow-up from traffic homicide investigators, who are expected to determine how the pursuit unfolded and whether any charges are filed.
