Tamarac BSO Cruiser Crash: What We Know So Far

A civilian driver was killed and three other people were hospitalized after a crash involving a Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser and a stolen Jeep Cherokee in Tamarac, according to news reports and BSO. This is what we know so far.

According to WSVN, NBC Miami, Local 10 News and Tamarac Talk, the crash happened near Northwest 31st Avenue and West Prospect Road, not at the Rock Island Road address listed in the original dispatch. Officials said the civilian driver was later pronounced dead, while a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy and two people tied to the other vehicle were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said the collision involved a stolen Jeep Cherokee out of Margate and began during a pursuit of the vehicle, according to BSO and the news reports. BSO said the pursuit ended with the crash and that detectives with the agency’s Traffic Homicide and Violent Crimes Units were notified. BSO’s Internal Affairs Unit also opened an administrative investigation.

The intersection remained closed to traffic for hours while investigators processed the scene, according to WSVN. As of the latest reporting, authorities had not announced any charges.

The emergency response included multiple units from Broward Sheriff’s Office, including a deputy from the traffic unit identified in the dispatch, along with investigators handling the crash scene. The call level and the agencies sent suggest a major collision with injuries and a law-enforcement vehicle involved, which typically triggers a traffic homicide investigation and internal review.

Dispatch records show prior incidents at the Rock Island Road address on May 10 and May 11, including two other calls on May 11. Those earlier dispatches were listed as other incidents.

BSO’s Traffic Homicide and Violent Crimes Units are continuing the investigation, and officials have not yet said whether any arrests or additional charges will follow.
