Sunrise Officer-Involved Shooting: What We Know So Far
A Sunrise police officer and a suspect were hospitalized after an officer-involved shooting in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday afternoon, and both were later stabilized, according to officials and news reports.
According to WSVN, the officer was shot in the leg and taken by ground to Broward Health Medical Center. WSVN also identified the suspect as 31-year-old Romuliss Jarquives Hicks. CBS Miami reported Hicks was in custody after the shooting.
Sunrise Police said officers were searching for a suspect wanted in an attempted murder and carjacking case in Sunrise when the shooting happened, according to WSVN and NBC Miami. Fort Lauderdale police responded to the 200 block of Northwest 22nd Avenue, near Transit Park, where the shooting was reported, according to WPTV, WSVN and NBC Miami.
The exact circumstances of the shooting remained unclear in the available reporting. NBC Miami reported the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.
The response drew a large police presence and a lockdown near the scene, according to NBC Miami, but no specific road closures were confirmed in the available reports.
Dispatch records show there have been three similar officer-involved shootings in Sunrise in the past six months.
