Stuart Historic Districts Advance to National Register
The proposed Downtown Stuart and East Stuart Historic Districts have cleared Florida's state review and now await final approval from the National Park Service for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Community Redevelopment Agency updated the city's 1998 historic properties survey, which identified both districts as candidates for national designation. Downtown Stuart serves as the city's historic commercial and civic center. East Stuart, Martin County's oldest historically Black neighborhood, contributed significantly to Stuart's growth.
A grant to Stuart Main Street supported the Downtown Stuart nomination. The partnership advanced the downtown district's application through state review.
National Register listing does not restrict private property owners but may provide access to preservation incentives and tax benefits.
