Strong Thunderstorm Nearing Joplin: Seek Shelter Indoors

A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Springfield, Missouri, for parts of Cherokee and Jasper counties, effective immediately until 4:45 PM CDT today, September 20, 2026. Residents are advised to seek shelter indoors if they are outdoors.

At 4:15 PM CDT, NWS radar detected a strong thunderstorm near Carl Junction, approximately 11 miles northwest of Joplin. This storm is tracking east at 25 mph.

The primary hazards associated with this storm include wind gusts up to 50 mph and half-inch hail. The NWS indicates that gusty winds could potentially knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible.

Areas expected to be impacted include northern Joplin, Webb City, Carl Junction, Oronogo, Carterville, Airport Drive, Alba, Purcell, Asbury, Neck City, Waco, and Lawton. Crestline is also within the affected zone.

This Special Weather Statement is set to expire at 4:45 PM CDT. Residents in the affected areas should remain vigilant and prioritize their safety during this period.
