Strategic Islands Gain Focus Amid U.S.-Iran Tensions

Why it matters locally: While Virginia does not have direct ties to the Persian Gulf, global oil supply disruptions stemming from heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz could indirectly affect gas prices and shipping costs for goods reaching the Commonwealth.

The United States is increasing its military actions focused on Iran, bringing renewed attention to three islands positioned at the entry to the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz. These islands have historically played a role in controlling ship traffic through the vital waterway. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the open sea. A significant portion of the world's oil supply transits through this strait daily. The three islands in question are Abu Musa and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs. Iran has maintained control over these islands since 1971. The United Arab Emirates also claims sovereignty over all three islands. These islands sit geographically at a point where they can influence maritime operations entering or exiting the Persian Gulf. Their location allows for observation and potential interdiction of vessel movements. Previous military confrontations and maneuvers in the region have frequently involved these same geographic points of interest.
