Storm Alert: Strong Thunderstorms Approaching Buchanan, McDowell, Wyoming Counties

Residents in Buchanan, McDowell, and Wyoming counties should be aware of a Special Weather Statement issued by the National Weather Service Charleston WV regarding strong thunderstorms. As of 9:28 PM EDT on September 21, 2026, a cluster of strong thunderstorms was detected 7 miles southeast of Hanover, moving east at 55 mph.

The primary hazards associated with this storm include wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail. These conditions could lead to downed tree limbs and unsecured objects being blown around. Minor damage to vegetation from hail is also possible. The National Weather Service advises that if you are outdoors, you should seek shelter inside a building.

Locations that may be impacted include Welch, Pineville, Mullens, Hanover, Twin Falls State Park, Gilbert Creek, Davy, Bradshaw, Iaeger, Clear Fork, Panther, Stacy, Hurley, Avondale, Wolf Pen, Baileysville, and Herndon.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, which may cause localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. This Special Weather Statement is effective immediately and is set to expire at 10:00 PM UTC (6:00 PM EDT) on September 21, 2026.
