St. Johns County Veterans Urged to Review Property Tax Exemptions
ST. JOHNS COUNTY – Local veterans and their families, from the historic streets of St. Augustine to the beaches of Ponte Vedra, are encouraged to review the property tax exemptions available to them, a crucial benefit that can significantly reduce their annual tax burden. With the April 1 deadline for filing exemption applications having passed, the St. Johns County Property Appraiser's Office reminds residents that understanding these benefits is key to ensuring they receive all eligible relief.
Florida law provides several property tax exemptions specifically for honorably discharged veterans, particularly those with service-connected disabilities. These exemptions vary based on the percentage of disability and can range from partial reductions to full exemptions from property taxes.
For example, veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more are eligible for a discount on their property's assessed value. Those with a total and permanent service-connected disability may qualify for a complete exemption from all property taxes on their homestead property.
While the primary application period for exemptions for the 2026 tax year concluded on April 1, it's never too early for veterans to gather the necessary documentation and understand the process for future filings. New residents or those who have recently received a disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) should contact the Property Appraiser's Office for guidance.
Required documentation typically includes proof of honorable discharge (such as a DD-214) and a letter from the VA confirming the service-connected disability rating. Surviving spouses of eligible veterans may also qualify for these exemptions under certain conditions.
Residents can visit the St. Johns County Property Appraiser's Office website or contact their office in St. Augustine directly for detailed information on eligibility requirements, application forms, and assistance with the filing process. Ensuring all eligible veterans in our community receive the benefits they've earned is a priority, and local officials are ready to assist.
