Spring Bite is Heating Up – Mahi, Kings & Tuna Showing Strong!
Spring Fishing Heats Up Off Merritt Island Coast
Merritt Island anglers are reporting a strong start to the spring fishing season, with mahi-mahi, kingfish, and blackfin tuna making notable appearances in local waters. Fishing charters and recreational boaters alike are finding success offshore, signaling a promising season ahead for those casting lines in the Atlantic.
Captains returning to Port Canaveral over the past few weeks have consistently brought in good hauls. Mahi-mahi, known for their vibrant colors and spirited fight, are being caught in good numbers, particularly around weed lines and floating debris roughly 15 to 30 miles offshore. Anglers are finding success using live bait, such as pilchards and sardines, as well as trolling with artificial lures.
King mackerel, or kingfish, are also providing plenty of action closer to shore, often within 5 to 10 miles of the coast. These powerful fish are a favorite target for many local fishermen, and their presence indicates healthy baitfish populations in the area. Slow-trolling live baits like pogies or blue runners has proven effective for landing these toothy predators.
Adding to the excitement, blackfin tuna have been reported in various depths, offering a fast-paced challenge for those equipped to target them. These smaller, but feisty, tuna are often found schooling and can provide excellent sport and table fare. Trolling small lures or jigging around bait schools has been a successful strategy.
Local bait and tackle shops, like those along North Courtenay Parkway in the heart of Merritt Island's longstanding fishing community, are seeing increased activity as residents stock up on supplies. The consensus among the fishing community is that the conditions are ripe for a productive spring, with warm waters and favorable currents contributing to the strong bite. Anglers are encouraged to check local marine forecasts and observe all fishing regulations before heading out.
With the weather warming and the fish biting, now is an excellent time for Merritt Island residents to take advantage of the rich offshore opportunities right in their backyard, near the iconic Kennedy Space Center.
